Gerardo Núñez is both a guitar virtuoso and a highly respected flamenco
innovator. In this recording he showcases the music styles he grew up
listening to and about which he remains passionate. The result is an
infectious mix of flamenco, jazz and popular Andalusian music that Núñez
plays with ease, accompanied by jazz musicians John Patitucci and Danilo
Pérez, and eclectic Armenian percussionist Arto Tuncboyaciyan.
Both traditional and
contemporary flamenco guitar music are explored on "Calima," as well as
popular Andalusian styles like the sevillana, the most popular
traditional Spanish dance in southern Spain. Núñez also performs his
remarkable interpretation of a pasodoble, the traditional march
played at bullfights. There is also a collaboration with the popular
guitar duo Strunz & Farah for which Gerardo has chosen a flamenco rumba,
one of the Caribbean-influenced flamenco styles created in the 19th
century when ships returned to Spain from the Americas.
